Josh Lingenfelter, a spokesperson for Vegas Gems, has commented on the study’s findings: It’s fascinating to observe the influence the royal family has in different areas across the UK. Over the past few years, royal news has become a significant conversation topic on social media, likely due to the popularity of TV dramas like The Crown

“It’s also interesting to note that areas further away from London, such as Lincoln and Bolton, are some of the places most-frequently searching for the royal family online.”

Methodology

  • Firstly, a list of initial search terms relating to the royal family was established. The complete list of terms can be found below.
  • Then, the monthly average search volume for each term in each city was taken from Google Keyword Planner.
  • Once this was complete, each location's monthly average search volume was compared against its population. This established the monthly average searches per 100,000 people, allowing for an accurate comparison of the search rate across locations of differing sizes.
  • This final figure was used to sort the locations into the final ranking
