Spain isn't Brits top tourist hotspot- according to Google data

Spain isn't the UK's favourite holiday hotspot

A new study reveals the UK’s most popular holiday destinations, and which UK cities are looking for a holiday most.

Using Google Keyword Planner, travel platform for experiences Hellotickets has analysed 2,566 search combinations across 77 UK cities.

A total of 213 holiday destinations were combined with 14 templates, including “[destination] holiday”, last minute holiday to [destination], short holiday in [destination], winter holiday in [destination], and summer holidays in [destination].

The study used destinations such as Turkey, Cape Verde, the Maldives, Greece, Thailand, Egypt, and Albania.

The total monthly average searches in each location were analysed and compared against its population, establishing the monthly average searches per 100,000 people.

Turkey is the UK’s favourite destination and receives an average of 27,129 Google searches per month.

Cape Verde is the second most popular, with 25,060 searches per month. The Maldives is third, with 23,935 average monthly searches.

Spain, which is normally the most popular holiday destination for older Britons, ranks in tenth place.

Jorge Díaz Largo, CEO and Founder of Hellotickets, commented on the study’s findings:

"For Brits wanting to keep their costs low, Turkey offers a relatively inexpensive holiday experience, from flights and accommodation to food and activities.

Compared to the UK, a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant in the Turkish capital costs almost a quarter of what is does in London.

"Cape Verde is also extremely popular due to its warm, sunny climate throughout the year, making it an attractive escape from the often chilly and wet UK weather.

"While there's no single 'cheapest time' to book, you should generally try to book your holiday as far ahead as possible.

"For those wanting to book excursions, tour operators often offer discounts for early bookings

"Therefore, try to book your holiday several months in advance to take advantage of these early-bird rates.

"A top tip is to join any loyalty programmes of airlines, hotels, and tour operators to accumulate points and receive member-exclusive discounts."

Prosciutto crowned Spain's fav pizza topping

Spain's favourite pizza toppings revealed

  • Prosciutto is revealed as Spain's most beloved pizza topping, with 1,175.83 searches a month
  • Mozzarella pizza is second with 1,070.00 monthly searches, whilst pepperoni pizza is third with 856.67 average monthly searches
  • Google search data for 50 of the most popular toppings was examined to determine the results

A new study has revealed Spain's favourite pizza toppings with prosciutto taking first place.

Dutch lifestyle magazine Dailybase analysed the number of monthly searches in Spain for 50 different pizza toppings, including terms such as "[x] pizza", "[x] pizza topping" and "where to buy [x] pizza".

1. Prosciutto

Prosciutto has an average of 1,175.83 monthly searches in Spain. Simply translating to “ham” from Italian, prosciutto is uncooked, unsmoked, dry cured pork. It is usually thinly sliced and comes from the hind leg.

2. Mozzarella

Mozzarella has 1,070.00 average monthly searches. Made of cow or buffalo milk, this semi-soft cheese is known for its subtle flavour and stretchy texture when melted. It is the main component of the classic Margherita pizza.

3. Pepperoni

Pepperoni is searched for an average of 856.67 times a month. The cured meat is a type of salami, made from pork or a combination of pork and beef. Paprika and chilli are the main spices found in pepperoni, but it can also contain black pepper, garlic, and mixed herbs.

4. Pulled Pork

In Spain, Pulled Pork has an average of 311.67 monthly searches. Made from slow cooked pork, pulled pork is shredded and usually mixed with a sauce, the most popular being BBQ. As a pizza topping, it adds both texture and flavour, and works well with onions and cheese.

5. Doner

Doner is searched for, on average, 298.33 times a month. Doner kebab is a type of seasoned meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie originating from Turkey. It can be made of lamb, beef, chicken, or in rare cases, pork, and is served in thin slices.

Top 5 Favourite Pizza Toppings

Rank Topping Average Monthly Search Volume
1 Prosciutto 1,175.83
2 Mozzarella 1,070.00
3 Pepperoni 856.67
4 Pulled Pork 311.67
5 Doner 298.33

Daniël de Voer, chief editor of Dailybase, has commented on the findings:

"One of the reasons why pizza is so popular is how versatile it can be; you can completely customise your toppings to fit your tastes and create a pizza unique to you.

"It is fascinating to discover which toppings are the most popular in each country. We can see plenty of influence from different cuisines across Europe, not just from Italy, such as the Mediterranean with the additions of feta, olives, and fish and even Turkish food, like doner meat making the list in some areas.

"With summer in full swing, if there's a topping on the list you haven't tried before, now is the perfect time to see what the hype is about."
