Countries that have produced the most Premier League players, according to new study

• England tops the list, with 267 players this season
• France and Brazil tie in second place, with 30 players each in the 23/24 Premier League
• Portugal produces more players than Scotland and Wales, with 22 players in the league, placing them third

Players from a total of 65 countries have participated in the 23/24 season of the Premier League – but which of those countries have produced the most players?

Experts at CasionAlpha.com have analysed the nationalities of current Premier League players in the 23/24 season to determine which countries have produced the most overall.

England is in first place, with 267 players in the Premier League this season. With the league’s homegrown rule requiring 17 out of a team’s 25 of players to be domestic, star players such as Ollie Watkins and Phil Foden have proven their value.

France and Brazil tie in second place, obtaining 30 players each, with valuable players such as William Saliba from France and Thiago Silva from Brazil maintaining top statistics for their clubs.

Portugal is third on the list, with 22 players; their most valuable player is Rúben Dias whose market value is £80,000,000.

With 19 players each, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain and Scotland tie in the fourth spot. Spain is the only country out of the four to have a player reach the top ten most valuable; Rodrigo Cascante shares the title of most valuable defensive midfielder in the Premier League with Declan Rice, both having a market value of £110,000,000.

 

Belgium sits at number five with 16 players in the league; this includes the Premier League’s highest earning player, Kevin De Bruyne, who has a salary of £20,800,000.

Wales appears in sixth place, with 15 players in the English Premier League. Brennan Johnson proves to be Wales’ most valuable player following his transfer from Nottingham Forrest to Tottenham Hotspur, with a fee of £55,000,000.

2022 World Cup winners Argentina have produced 14 players in this season’s Premier League, placing them seventh on the list. Argentinian Julián Álvarez has contributed 10 goals to potential league winners Manchester City.

 

Denmark takes eighth place, with 13 football players achieving a spot in the Premier League. This includes Joachim Andersen, who has played the most minutes out of all of Denmark’s players with over 3,000 spent on the field.

Placing ninth is Germany, with 10 players in the league. One of Germany’s star players includes Kai Havertz who has a market value of £60,000,000.

In tenth place is Italy, with 9 players making it to the highest division of English football. Italy’s Destiny Udogie is the most valuable left-back in the league with a market value of £45,000,000.

Expert reveals Love Island’s smoking and vaping rules

An expert reveals Love Island's latest smoking and vaping rules as the hit show returns for its eleventh series.

 

While viewers might think the islanders have it easy with food, drink, clothes, and parties provided, there are strict rules around smoking and vaping that contestants must adhere to, as revealed by experts at Go Smoke Free.

 

The main rules at a glance:

 

• Disclosure: Islanders must disclose if they smoke or vape before entering the villa. If not, they aren't allowed to smoke.
• Daily allowance: Contestants are allocated a vape or up to 10 cigarettes a day.
• Designated area: There is a designated smoking area where only one person can smoke at a time.
• Prohibited items: Smoking items, such as lighters or vapes, cannot be taken into the villa from the smoking area.

 

Are islanders allowed to smoke or vape?

 

Producers do allow smokers in the villa, provided they disclose the habit before entering.

 

In previous seasons, contestants were given up to 20 cigarettes per day. This practice led to criticism for glamorising smoking, with a study revealing cigarettes appeared on screen every five minutes on average and was responsible for more than half of the show's Ofcom complaints in 2017. An Ofcom information request from 2023 reveals Love Island was the third most complained about TV show under the category “Drugs, smoking, solvents or alcohol” from January 2014 to November 2023, behind Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Consequently, ITV introduced significant changes in 2018. 

Season five islander Amy Hart revealed in a TikTok video smokers were given ten cigarettes a day and had to smoke alone in a monitored area at the front of the villa. Similarly, season nine’s Olivia and Maxwell confirmed in an interview with KISS FRESH that undisclosed smokers are not permitted to smoke at all.

In 2018, Paul Mortimer, ITV's Controller for Digital Channels, revealed to Radio Times that more than half of Ofcom's complaints about the show were related to smoking. This led to a ban on smoking within the villa and garden. Instead, a designated smoking area was established outside the villa grounds, which continues today. Season ten’s Casa Amor bombshell Kodie Murphy confirmed this in a TikTok video.

Only one contestant can smoke at a time, preventing group conversations and ensuring no important discussions occur off-camera. However, there is a camera set up in the smoke area.

 

When the ban was announced in 2018, Angela Jain, Managing Director of ITV Studios, explained to Radio Times, “We are treating it like smoking in a workplace. Everyone’s used to it at home—you can’t smoke in a restaurant, you can’t smoke at work. So we just created a very clear separate area at the front of the villa.”

Insights from previous islanders

2023 Love Island all-stars Hannah Elizabeth and Liberty Poole revealed in a KISS FRESH interview that many islanders vaped and often argued over who could use the smoking area first. Season ten’s Zac Ashford mentioned on TikTok that islanders were given designated times to use the smoking area.

 

During a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Laura Anderson from season four disclosed that producers provided “five for social smokers, 10 if daily smoker,” adding that once you have used up your allowance, you can’t have more: “When you finish that’s it.”

“Smoking is a challenging addiction to break, and vaping is an effective tool to help individuals transition away from cigarettes. However, it’s vital that vaping is seen as a stop-smoking aid, and not adopted as a recreational habit.”

Ranking as the player with the most Instagram popularity is Jude Bellingham. The Real Madrid midfielder boasts an impressive popularity score of 9.1 out of ten, due to a follow count of 31,500,000 and a whopping average of 3,595,550 likes per post.

Kobbie Mainoo, one of the youngest players on the squad and midfielder for Manchester United, is second in the ranking with a popularity score of 7.9 out of ten.

Cole Palmer – Chelsea midfielder or winger - ranks third for fan engagement with a popularity score of 7.6 out of ten. He has 2.6 million followers, an average of 473,662 likes and 9,564 comments, and an 18.54% engagement rate.

Manchester City heartthrob Jack Grealish is fourth on the list with an overall score of 7.1 out of ten. He has 9.2 million followers, averages 915,170 likes per post, and has an engagement rate of 6.97%.

Ranking in fifth place is Arsenal player, Declan Rice, who secures a popularity score of 7.0 out of ten.  Despite having more followers than Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer, Rice is let down by the average likes and comments per post.

On the bottom of the list is Lewis Dunk, who plays for Brighton & Hove Albion, reporting a low popularity score of 1.9 out of ten. The centre-back has 82,900 followers, receives 9,014 likes per post and has a 10% engagement rate.

Aston Villa player Ezri Konsa is second to last in the ranking, with a popularity score of 2.5, while James Trafford is third to last, with a 2.5 popularity score.

Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace is fourth to last, with a popularity score of 2.8 out of ten. He has 43,400 followers, receives 10,130 likes and 175 comments per post, and has an engagement rate of 20.4%.

Fourth to last in the ranking is Newcastle player Kieran Trippier, who finds himself with an average popularity score of just 3.2 out of ten.
